Briana Kinsey | Miss DC 2017Education: The University of Alabama (B.A.); American University
Talent: Vocal, Born For This Platform: Daring to Defeat Diabetes Briana Kinsey has felt the calling to healing the first time she held the hand of a child at Children’s Hospital. She realized then her college major would have to be changed from marketing to medicine. Two years later, her mother and both grandparents would be diagnosed with diabetes and the calling became a mission. In 2012, Briana founded the non-profit Daring to Defeat Diabetes to advocate, educate and fundraise around the issue of the 6th leading cause of death in the country.

While preparing to compete for Miss America, Briana is working toward medical school. A graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in biology, she plans to attend medical school in 2018 at Georgetown or Howard, and become a Pediatric Endocrinologist and actively heal children with diabetes by 2023. Her work with the Girl Scouts of America brought her back to her roots of working with young girls to work from the inside out to become healthy. Over 200 Girl Scouts have earned the Daring to Defeat Diabetes patch.
Briana is no stranger to the stage, singing the national anthem at American University basketball games, and is a regular speaker working with partners of Children’s Medical network Hospitals, UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center, American Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Southeastern Diabetes Education Services. She is the recipient of a Point of Light Award, the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, and Champion to Stop Diabetes Award.
